History tells us that the mayor of Sittard gave permission for a market to be held as far back as 1802. After the long winter break, St Joep marks the start of a new season for stallholders, who find themselves wishing each other a Happy New Year. The five kilometres and more of market stalls is a bargain hunter’s delight: not only is there a wonderful atmosphere, but there are fantastic bargains to be had.

Sittard’s weekly market, set against a magnificent array of historic street frontages, has an international allure and is held every Thursday from 8 am to 2 pm. There are always excellent bargains to be had, as well as fresh seasonal produce and other unique merchandise.
